Tasting Notes

Wiener Gemischter Satz (literally Austrian mixed bunch) refers to the tradition of planting different and complementary grape varieties in a vineyard, and then harvesting and fermenting them together. Today, field blends elsewhere are rare, but in Austria, Gemischter Satz has become a calling card for the Vienna D.A.C. In 2003, Richard Zahel was the first to market a Wiener Gemischter Satz.

Zahel’s organic BIO Gemischtersatz (certified organic since 2018) is made from Gruner Veltliner, Riesling, and Chardonnay. Furthermore, three important Vienna vineyards are sources for fruit: Nussberg, Oberlaa and Mauer.

This is an exceptional example of a traditional wine. The three grapes in the blend create a crisp, fresh wine with exotic aromas of green apples, pears, passionfruit and a touch of white pepper. The palate is fruity, full and round, with some spiciness on the long finish.

Food Pairings

Very versatile, but try with quiche, salads, paella and, of course, strudel
