Waterstone

Waterstone Winery was formed in 2000 when veteran winemaker Philip Zorn and longtime wine executive Brent Shortridge were introduced and discovered a shared interest in creating luxury wines at affordable prices.

Bringing together their previously established relationships with Napa Valley growers and vintners, the pair set out to develop balanced wines of varietal character through intelligent sourcing. Preferring to focus on the wine itself rather than the accumulation of land and facilities, they own no vineyards themselves, nor do they own the facility where their wines are made. Dedicated winemaking, strong relationships with top growers and long-term grape contracts are the keys to Waterstone’s quality and success in California.

In 2017, Shortridge bought out his partner and signed Laurie Hook, ex of Beringer Napa Valley. Laurie has been quickly increasing the quality and number of wines in the Waterstone portfolio. Expect to see big things from this small producer over the next few years!

    Waterstone Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

With its Bordeaux-like presence, this wine is deep, rich, and lingering. Firm, integrated tannins frame the concentrated, dark fruit (currant, black cherry, wild berry, plum.) Toasty oak and an earthy edge add to the wine’s great complexity. Aromas of cedar oak, currants, black cherries and ripe plums suggest the fruit flavors to come, as does the intense, deep red color of the wine. Dense, mouth-filling cherries, plums, chocolate and tobacco marry with the oak nuances. The firm tannins underlying the wine’s core provide balance, leading to a long, lingering finish.
