Luigi Righetti

Located within Valgatara, in the heart of Valpolicella Classico, the Luigi Righetti estate is small to mid-sized, family run winery. Since 1909, when Angelo Righetti first earned a reputation as an outstanding winemaker, the family has focussed on producing quality wines offering extremely good value.

Righetti’s wines exhibit an exceptional balance between fruit, wood aging, acidity and alcohol. The result is a line of wines that have good aging potential, but are available for early consumption as well. The most exciting tradition to evolve from the Veneto region is the process used to dry grapes prior to pressing. Amarone and “Campolieti”, the ripasso Valpolicella, have traditionally been the products to benefit from this process.

Gian Maria (Gianni) Righetti is the fifth generation within the Righetti family to carry on the family, wine-making tradition. Gianni’s father, Luigi, took over winemaking in the 40’s and was the first in the family to consider production beyond supply of local demand. Gianni took over winemaking responsibilities in 1985, has broadened the line to include single vineyard offerings and wines with international appeal.

Righetti works organically, with no use of pesticides or fungicides in the vineyards. They also use very limited sulphur in the winery. Their wines have free SO2 levels just at or below levels measurable in a laboratory and well below that tolerated in Organic production.

Righetti’s Amarone is produced from selected Corvina (70%), Rondinella (20%) and other indigenous varietals (10%) grown in the hills of the Valpolicella Classico DOC. The finest bunches of ripe grapes are placed in shallow, wood crates and left to dry over a period of 3-5 months. Thereafter, the grapes are pressed, the juice is fermented to dryness, and the wine is aged in large casks of Slavonian oak.

  • Luigi-Righetti-Sognum-Cabernet-Sauvignon

Luigi Righetti Sognum Cabernet Sauvignon 2020

This wine is inspired by the appassimento process used to produce the famous Amarone della Valpolicella. Because of the unusual production methods (for Cabernet Sauvignon anyway) this wine is somewhat different than Cabernet from California or Chile. Appassimento (the drying of grapes for about 40 days prior to pressing) gives the wine a concentrated, uniquely Veronese signature. Following the pressing of the dried grapes, fermentation takes place in French oak barrels where the wine remains for 6 months and spends an additional 6 to 8 months in bottle before release.

Can be served lightly chilled.
