The Greco family are traditionally olive oil producers, making oil from hundreds of hectares of (now certified organic) olive fields in the heart of the production of Cirò wine. Today, the estate is run by no fewer than seven siblings: Cataldo, Ernesto, Filomena, Natale Francesco, Saverio, Marilena and Giancarlo. They have continued the oil tradition, but are also now carving quite a large name for themselves as producers of high quality Calabrian wines - the much coveted three red glasses from Gambero Rosso awarded to one of their reds this year being testimony to this. The farm is found in Cariati on the Ionian coast of Calabria, half way between Sibari and the province of Crotone. The hillside vineyards lie at different altitudes, and temperatures between day and night vary greatly, allowing the grapes to achieve full physiological ripeness. The Greco family have also recently decided to invest in research, and the estate now boasts a fully-equipped laboratory for analyzing both the wines and the oil. Grape varieties cultivated are strictly autochthonous, with the main focus being the two red grapes Gaglioppo and Nero di Calabria and the local white variety Greco.
iGreco wines are guided by the highly regarded Italian enologist, Riccardo Cotarella. As a result, “Cata” is a fleshier, silkier example of the usually heavy Gaglioppo variety, Catà is the perfect introduction to Calabrian wines. Six months in barrique gives a velvety roundness to the wine and a burst of spicy red fruits and chocolate notes come through on the palate and linger on the finish.
