Fenocchio

For more than five generations the Azienda Agricola Giacomo Fenocchio has been making and ageing wines grown on is own vineyards (about 12 hectares) in the heart of the Barolo zone.

Today the winery is owned and run by Fenocchio’s brothers, Claudio and Alberto, who are carrying on the tradition handed down by their father, Giacomo, with a dedication and passion.

Winemaker Claudio Fenocchio is best described as a “radical traditionalist” in a region where the divide between traditional and modern is clear and well-defined. He is firmly in the traditional camp because he eschews all new wood treatment and macerates the wine on skins for about 30 days, preferring to let the fruit and structure of the grape define the wine entirely. However, he is also a bit of a radical. Claudio recalls his grandfather talking about 90 day macerations and he has begun experimenting with these ultra-long macerations in an attempt to redefine traditional Barolo.

The annual production of the winery is quite small, about 45,000 bottles subdivided between the traditional Peimonte varietals Dolcetto, Barbera and Nebbiolo, as well as the more esoteric, Arneis, Favorita and Freisa. The family owns vineyards in three of the great Barolo crus: Bussia (Monforte d’Alba), Cannubi (Barolo) and Villero (Castiglione Falletto). These have long been recognized as having superior microclimates for producing wines with outstanding aromas, flavours and generous structures.

Approximately 80% of production is exported to foreign markets, while the remainder distributed throughout fine restaurants and wine stores in Italy.
