Friuli, as it is usually referred to, is located in the Northeast section of Italy and sometimes has more in common with Slovenia to the immediate West or Austria to the North than with the rest of Northern Italy. In fact, it was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and did not become part of Italy until after World War 1.It is the only region of Italy to label its wine by grape variety. This however has not necessarily helped the marketing of the region since it is largely a white wine region.Cuisine is a mixture of peasant fare, sophisticated Venetian food and influences from Slavic and Austrian cultures. Like many other northern regions of Italy, polenta is a staple food, served with stewed meats, game and cheese. Bread is used to make canaderli, which are dumplings that are served in broth or with meat. In Venice, seafood is widely consumed, often as tapas-style cicchetti which are consumed at the many bars with a glass of Prosecco.
Founded in the 1960’s by grandfather “Min” Zorzettig, the Tunella winery is now stewarded by his grandsons Massimo and Marco Zorzettig, along with their mother Gabriela. They are guided by principles of respect for their grandfather’s vision, along with a strong desire to experiment. The Tunella estate consists of 70 hectares of vineyards located in the Collio Orientale (eastern hills) of Friuli. In keeping with local tradition, 70% of their vineyard area is devoted to production of white grapes.
The wine has an intense straw yellow color, evolving to a richer yellow with aging. It has a fruity and fragrant nose evoking aromas of warm bread crust and intense perfume of acacia blossom and ripe tropical fruit. The palate echoes the nose and is elegant, medium-bodied with moderate acidity and delicate hints of yeast. A wine with a decisive character.
Ribolla Gialla is a great vine native to Friuli, one of the jewels of this beautiful region, renowned for the production of premium wines, especially great whites. La Tunella is a winery based in Colli Orientali del Friuli and has always been very focused on indigenous grapes. This Ribolla Gialla “Rjgialla” is a good example of the quality of wine produced by La Tunella. It is a wine that proudly retains its roots in Friuli.
Sauvignon Blanc from the Colli Orientali in North East Italy, this has an intense bouquet with scents of sage and tomato leaf blend with delicate notes of melon and yellow pepper. Perfectly balanced, fresh, dry with long aromatic persistence.
The bouquet of the 2021 Pinot Grigio ‘Jesera’ (‘Jesera’ is a term for a small glacial lake) is intriguing with aromas of jasmine, ginger, pear and apple with hints of citrus and incense. The palate is lively and savoury with a creamy and vibrant finish. There is a slight tannic note to the wine which comes from the skin contact.
