Tasting Notes
“Ripasso” Valpolicella wines are so named as they are Valpolicella wines which have undergone a second fermentation on the lees of an Amarone della Valpolicella. The result is a wine with a nature that sits somewhere between the entry level Valpolcella and the very robust Amarone.
The 2019 Villa Mattielli Ripasso “San Giacomo” is produced from traditional Veronese grapes that have been grown in the pergola system and are harvested by hand. The harvest typically takes place in late September. After the winemaking process (noted above), the wine is matured in French oak barriques (80%) and stainless steel (20%) for 10 months before bottling.
The nose on this deep garnet wine displays intense dark cherry and red fruit aromas with hints of fruitcake, baking spice, cedar and vanilla. The wine is full and rich in the mouth with a lingering finish of dried fruits and soft tannins. We found the 2019 version to be quite rich and concentrated, staying true to the excellent climatic conditions of the vintage.
