Tasting Notes
The Charrier family purchased their farm at the eastern edge of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation in 1943. Until 1998 they delivered their grapes to the cooperative, but a new vision was established that year by the next generation, when brother and sister Caroline and Frédéric Charrier decided to produce and bottle their own wines. Today, Caroline handles the wine making while Frederic attends to the vineyards. Their estate vineyards are distinguished by sandy soils which give the wines fine tannins and great elegance. The end results are wines of distinct freshness, vibrancy and balance. The name Courtedune is a derivation from the French word Courthézon or “sand dune”.
Their Châteaneuf-du-Pape is essentially pure Grenache with only a tiny amount of other permitted grapes which Caroline notes have “snuck into the vineyards over the years”. Whole bunches are fermented and matured in concrete tanks with pumping over for gentle extraction. Just pure and simple winemaking that values finesse over power and allows the distinctive nature of the terroir to shine through!
