Tasting Notes

The new Alexander Zahel Grüner Veltliner Alte Reben (Old Vines) comes from Retzer Land, a small designated area about 1 hour north of Vienna in the Niederösterreich growing area (aka Lower Austria which is located in the northeastern area of Austria). The soil in this area is mix of sandstone and granite with limestone topsoil perfect for developing a unique mineral character in the resulting wines. Biodynamic Grüner Veltliner was hand harvested from 45-year-old vines at the end of August to maintain a crisp acidity. Whole bunch pressing and spontaneous fermentation in 1200 ltr. Stockinger barrels (more on that below!) and 6 months on the fine lees. The wine received minimal sulfuring and no filtration or fining before bottling. Certified Bio, Demeter Certified and Regenerative Organic Certified. What more could you ask for?

This wine is alive; vivacious! The bouquet is vibrant and fresh with aromas of apple and citrus fruit paired with classic Grüner notes of white pepper. On the palate, it is bone dry with crisp acidity and elegant yellow fruit and spice notes. The lingering finish is crisp and mineral driven.

A note about Stockinger barrels: The choice of oak is part of the unique story of this wine. Stockinger barrels are renowned for their high-quality construction using Austrian and German oak, designed to enhance a wine’s structure and fruit rather than overpower it with oak flavor. This is achieved through a long air-seasoning process and lighter toasting. The primary aim is to preserve and enhance the wine’s intrinsic fruit and structural qualities without adding heavy oak layers or flavors. Many of the best Austrian wines use these barrels.

Food Pairings

Schnitzel and Seafood come to mind first, but also white meats, citrus salads and even dishes with Asian spice.
