Tasting Notes
Vinos del Paseante is an interesting project of Codorniu, who have defined 5 wines, in 5 key Spanish D.O.P. zones, to represent the complementary varietal and terroir character in one wine.
“La Escucha” – Listen to Her! is their representation of Mencia from Bierzo. They have chosen the Owl to represent the wine (traditionally a symbol of wisdom, fertility and femininity). Old vines grow in this rugged terrain, a landscape marked by its slate and granite slopes. And it is these slate slopes that provide an important start to the final product; a wine with elevated aromatics, velvety body and pleasing freshness.
La Escucha is a cherry-coloured wine with amethyst highlights. Intense primary aromas of blackberry, plum compote, a delicate touch of mineral and black liquorice against perfectly integrated notes of toasted wood. In the mouth it reveals excellent balance, pleasing freshness, with lively, silky tannins giving way to a pleasing aromatic fruity, spicy aftertaste.
The wine is aged for some months in French and American oak barrels.
Food Pairings
A versatile wine, it pairs perfectly with many dishes: barbecued meats, stews, game, mushrooms, smoked or dried meat, sheep’s cheese, sauteed vegetables, etc.
