Conca d’Oro, Prosecco Conegliano Valdobbiadene
Superiore Extra Dry 2022 DOCG (Veneto):

Prosecco is the world’s largest export category in sparkling wine accounting for over 40% of all the sparkling wine exported. Of course, such a huge production leads to a lot of very ordinary wine but that is NOT what we are presenting today.

All Prosecco wines are produced from the local Glera varietal using the “tank” method (aka Charmat in France; Martinotti in Italy) where the secondary fermentation occurs in high-tech, pressurized tanks which capture the “bubbles” prior to bottling. However, at the top of the Prosecco quality pyramid you will find 4 Prosecco “Superiore DOCG” designations, including that of Conegliano Valdobbiadene in which Conca d’Oro resides. These hillside DOCG vineyards produce higher quality grapes than those from the flat plains that cover most of the Prosecco DOC region.

Another distinguishing feature of the Conca d’Oro…the wine is from a single vintage – 2022. Most Prosecco is non-vintage, allowing for blending across multiple vintages. The 2022 vintage is considered great in terms of both quantity and quality of wine produced.

The Conca d’Oro Prosecco Conegliano Valdobbiadene Superiore Extra Dry DOCG 2022 has a delicate and frothy mousse that is both delicious and easy to enjoy. Expect a fresh and vibrant wine with good acidity that dances on the palate and bursts forth with fresh aromas of green apples, banana, citrus fruits and acacia flowers.

Nota Bene: Conca d’Oro is meticulous in it’s preservation of freshness, starting with the harvest whereby dry ice is used to chill wines through harvest, allowing them to drastically reduce the sulphur required to preserve the wine.

Majolini, nv Franciacorta Brut DOCG (Lombardia):

Awarded the coveted DOCG designation in 1995, Franciacorta is located east of Milan in north-central Italy and extends between Brescia, Lake Garda and Trento, south of Lake Iseo. It is a small area with very high-quality production of about 20 million bottles, roughly 1/20th the production of Prosecco DOC & DOCG.

Like Champagne, to which it is often compared, the soils here are defined by a large proportion of limestone. Grape varieties include Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco, Pinot Nero and more recently, the native variety of Erbamat has been permitted in the blend. Sparkling Franciacorta wines are produced by the “metodo classico” in which a second fermentation takes place in the bottle just like the better-known wines of Champagne.

The Majolini Franciacorta Brut N/V is a blend of organically farmed Chardonnay (90%) and Pinot Nero (10%) and aged on the lees in bottle for 36 months. This is an exceptionally classy sparkler! Light gold in colour with a persistent bead, this dry (Brut) Sparkler has a lovely fragrance of tropical fruit, peach and a whiff of brioche. The elegant palate shows apple, pear and citrus flavors, plus sage and other Mediterranean herbs. Soft and round in the mouth with beautifully balanced acidity. A perfect bubbly to serve with festive hors d’oeuvres or to ring in the New Year!
