An Introduction to Mendocino
California’s northernmost viticultural region, located inland from the Pacific coast, Mendocino is still close enough to enjoy some of the ocean’s cooling effects. The terroir varies considerably across this broad region, largely mirroring the mountainous topography, and the diversity in growing conditions is reflected in the range of wine styles produced. Red varieties, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Zinfandel are most prominent in this region that is regarded as being good value for the money. This is not necessarily because the wines are of lesser quality but the region is not nearly as well known as Napa or Sonoma.
