Located in central Italy, Tuscany is the fifth biggest wine-producing region in the country, but probably the one that is the most well-known to people in North America. However, the region more diverse than many realize. Between Florence and Siena, of course, lies Chianti, and further south is the towns of Montalcino (Brunello) and Montepulciano (Vino Nobile). The Tuscan coast, which includes the vast Maremma district as well as the areas around Bolgheri, is where some very exciting wines are being made in a more international style. In Tuscany, it is not uncommon to see pappardelle (a long flat noodle) served with tomato or meat sauce, including wild boar. Bistecca Fiorentina is a thick T-bone steak that is often served with white cannellini beans and mixed grilled vegetables. Another famous dish of the region is Panzanella, a salad with chunks of soaked stale bread and tomatoes, sometimes also onions and basil, dressed with olive oil and vinegar.
