Tasting Notes

Roccamora Negro Amaro Salento IGT 2021 :
Though often written as Negroamaro, the correct presentation of the name should be in two words Negro Amaro (Native Wine Grapes of Italy-Ian D’Agata © 2014 Univ. of Cali.). The name refers to the black colour of the grape skin. The variety is noted for its dependable production, being adaptable to many soils and for its ability to maintain acidity in hot climates.

Roccamora is made from 20-year-old vines, handpicked and matured in stainless steel to maintain its vibrant natire. This wine is fresh and easy drinking. An explosion of spice, leather and tobacco on the nose, the palate follows through with a velvety texture, light tannins and a slightly bitter aftertaste. Excellent with roast and grilled meats, especially lamb. 13.5%

Antièri Susumaniello Salento IGT 2021 :
Here is a wine that hardly any of your wine loving friends will have ever sampled. Susumaniello is a grape that by the late 1990’s had almost disappeared on the Salento but due to the dedicated work of a handful of dedicated growers, the variety has made a comeback. A very productive variety (the name means “load up the donkey”) it requires strict pruning in the vineyard to limit yields.

Schola Sarmenti is one of the few wineries to make a 100% Susumaniello wine. Their vineyards are approximately 8 years old. Grapes are all selected by hand and brought to the winery is small crates. The wine sees 12 months is French tonneau before bottling. A deep ruby colour in the glass, the bouquet is intense with aromas of ripe raspberries, blueberries, purple plum and black pepper. The rich and structured palate shows strong tannins with a dark and brooding finish. Would make a great pairing for BBQ’d ribs or chicken. 15% Alc.

Cubardi Primitivo Salento IGT 2020 :
Primitivo is one of Italy’s ten most panted grape varieties. Its name derives from the Latin primativius meaning the first to ripen. Harvests for Primitivo are usually in August. It was confirmed in 1994 through genetic testing that the grape is identical to California’s Zinfandel.

The Cubardi is a fuller-bodied style of Primitivo than our always available Criteria. Produced from organically grown grapes from 65-year-old vines, it sees 6 months in medium toast French oak tonneau and a further 8 months in bottle before release. This is a massive and luscious red with a warm super ripe nose of berry jam and chocolate. On the palate it is weighty and velvety smooth with big flavours of black fruit, chocolate and coffee. Mouthcoating, long and incredibly rich. This is a wine for contemplation. 15% Alc.
