Tasting Notes

Our Best-Selling Reds are tried and true favourites of restaurants and private customers alike. A case of 12 contains two (2) bottles of each of the following:

No doubt there are intriguing differences between a Cabernet from Lodi, California and an Aussie Shiraz from Clare Valley, Australia; a Malbec from Argentina and a Tempranillo from Rioja, Spain; a bold, southern Italian Primitivo and a cooler climate, northern Italian Ripasso enriched by spending time on the lees of an Amarone! In the end, the differences outweigh the similarities, but they still hit many of the same high notes in terms of their fruit forward nature and bold expression.

This mixed case is a great chance to do some varietal comparisons: Cabernet vs Shiraz; Malbec vs Tempranillo; Primitivo vs Corvina. It is also an opportunity to conduct new world vs old world and country vs country comparisons.

2016 James Mitchell Cabernet Sauvignon (Lodi, California): Full-bodied and fruit forward, robust, ripe blackberry and dark cherry, warm spice, smoky mocha and vanilla from oak aging.

2019 Kingston Estate Shiraz (Clare Valley, Australia): Prominent plum and pepper spice with the essence of black olives and hints of toasted oak. Cassis and dark chocolate notes balanced with fine tannins.

2019 Septima Malbec (Mendoza, Argentina): An abundance of fruit such as plum and cherry, with notes of dried fig and violets. The tannins are soft and rounded on the palate with a nice, fruity finish.

2017 Bodegas Bilbainas Vina Pomal Crianza (Rioja, Spain): Black fruit with notes of liquorice, vanilla and toasted flavours, some floral notes and soft tannins. French and American oak barrel aging.

2019 Schola Sarmenti Primitvo Critera (Puglia, Italy): Bursting with sumptuous dark cherry and blackberry fruit. Rich, round, juicy, and expressive with a silky edged finish.

2019 Luigi Righetti Campolieti Valpolicella Ripasso (Veneto, Italy): Strawberry, dried cherry, currants and hints of leather, autumn leaves and Asian spice; dry, medium-bodied with classic ripasso flavours, a ripe, round palate and some wood tannins.
