Tasting Notes

This mixed case provides an opportunity to sample exceptional examples from three of Spain’s most famous red wine regions – Rioja, Bierzo and Priorat. Rioja, in north-central Spain, is the most famous and well distributed Spanish appellation. Bierzo is on the western side of Spain and is enjoying a newfound popularity. Priorat is a much smaller and mountainous area located in the east, not far from the Mediterranean coast, that has incredible winemaking history.

$199.50 case of 6 (Avg. $33.25 a bottle. 2 bottles of each wine)

Bodegas Bilbainas “Viña Pomal” Crianza 2019 (Rioja):
Produced from 100% Tempranillo, Viña Pomal has a fresh, intense nose dominated by aromas of juicy black cherry, Mediterranean herbs along with pleasant licorice notes. Vanilla and toasted flavours come through from its 12 months in oak. The palate is balanced, soft and displays considerable concentration. Good structure and well integrated tannins.

Viños del Paseante “La Escucha” 2020 (Bierzo):
100% Mencia (pronounced “Men–thee-ah”), this is the grape of choice for production of red Bierzo wines. Sometimes referred to as Spain’s Pinot Noir, the wines can vary in intensity from medium-bodied and fruity to concentrated and brooding. La Escucha (meaning “Listen to Her!”) is a cherry-coloured wine with amethyst highlights. Intense primary aromas of blackberry, plum compote, with a delicate touch of mineral and herbs against perfectly integrated notes of toasted wood. On the palate it reveals excellent balance and freshness, with lively, silky tannins giving way to a pleasing aromatic fruity, spicy aftertaste.

Scala Dei “Prior” 2019 (Priorat):
Grenache (65%), Carignan, (15%), Cabernet Sauvignon (10%) and Syrah (10%).
A ruby red with hints of garnet and blue tones, the aromas are intense and persistent with red and black fruits complimented by floral nuances of violet and iris and a spicy vanilla/sandalwood note. It is medium to full-bodied with enticing flavours of black cherry and chocolate framed by silky tannins on the long finish. Only native yeasts are used. The wine is then aged for 12 months in one year old French oak barrels.
