Tasting Notes

Tuscan Treats offers a taste of the three styles of Sangiovese based wines produced in Tuscany. Two are pure Sangiovese and one highlights the affinity Sangiovese has for blending with other varieties.

Armilla, Rosso di Montalcino 2020:

Soils are rich in minerals and chalky clay with southern exposures keeping the vines well ventilated thanks to the cool sea breezes. As with its older sibling Brunello, Rosso di Montalcino is comprised of 100% Sangiovese Grosso grapes. Rosso di Montalcino sees less time in oak barrel than Brunello, which has allowed winemakers to produce fresher and more vibrant wines.

Armilla Rosso di Montalcino comes from a small 1-hectare portion of the estate where the vines average 12 years. Maceration takes place in stainless steel tanks for 3 weeks followed by 18 months of aging in 25hl oak botte. A ruby colour with slight garnet hue leads to aromas of red berries, purple flower, leather and pipe tobacco. The taste is full and dry with grippy tannins and a lingering note of dried orange peel. Only 400 cases produced.

Montepeloso, A’Quo 2022:

Produced from blend of Sangiovese 55%, Malvasia Nera 20%, Cabernet Sauvignon 10% and a smattering of other varieties comprising the remaining 15%, the grapes are sourced from vines that are rooted in silex soils. All grapes are harvested by hand and aged for 7 months in a variety of barrel sizes (15% new). If you are planning to have a nice Prime Rib Roast over the holidays, this would be a great accompaniment.

“The A’Quo is a bold, juicy wine to drink now and over the next few years. Succulent red cherry fruit, sweet spice, cedar, tobacco and new leather give this mid-weight vinous red quite a bit of charm.” – 91 Points Antonio Galloni (Vinous August 2023)

Colognole, Chianti Rufina “Collezione” 2019:

Colognole isolates a specific vineyard in fine vintages to represent classic Rufina Sangiovese. The 2019 vintage is sourced from the ‘Le Rimesse’ vineyard that was planted in 2007. It is aged for 18 months in a single Slavonian oak cask (20 hl.) for 18 months. Only 2,100 bottles!

The wine has a complex nose, which has all the finest components of Sangiovese (cherry, dried herbs, licorice). The fruit, acidity and tannins are nicely integrated resulting in a silky and elegant wine that is lovely to drink now but will also age nicely over the next 5 to 8 years.
