Zinfandel
Black grape grown almost exclusively in California which produces full-throttle, intense wines showing black fruit, raisin and a certain spiciness. The grape was brought to California during the Gold Rush and became widely planted because it thrived in California’s hot, dry climate. Some of these original vines are still producing today, albeit in miniscule quantities. Recent DNA analysis has confirmed that Zinfandel is identical to Primitivo, from the Puglian region of Italy, but also that both grapes are the same as a fairly rare, ancient Croatian grape known as Tribidrag.
