Castello Banfi

Castello Banfi was created in 1978 by the Italian American brothers, John, and Harry Mariani, when they acquired the Castello di Poggio alle Mura and surrounding vineyards to the southwest of Montalcino near Sant’Angelo Scalo. The aim was to simply produce the best Brunello di Montalcino (DOC/DOCG) possible from their carefully nurtured vineyards and state-of-the-art winery. As a result, the Mariani’s hired one of the greatest Italian winemakers of the time, Ezio Rivella, to turn their dream into reality. Almost half a century later, the estate is still family owned, now in the capable hands of the third generation with Cristina Mariani-May.

Widely known for their Pursuit of Excellence and research contributions, the property consists of 7100 acres that produce quality wines by aligning closely with the culture and development of its territory. Castello Banfi has been awarded the Equalitas certification of sustainability and has received international recognition for exceptional environmental, ethical and social responsibility.

Castello Banfi Rosso di Montalcino 2023

Castello Banfi Rosso di Montalcino might be considered Brunello’s younger sibling. Made from 100% select Sangiovese clones, Rosso di Montalcino offers rich, forward fruit flavors in a well-structured wine with supple tannins and good acidity for dining. The soil is calcareous and well-structured. On the nose it is intense, fresh, and fruity with typical varietal characteristics of violet, cherry, and plum. In the mouth it is elegant, balanced, with a velvety tannic texture; closes with a savoury and licorice trail.
