Penley Estate
Penley is a family-owned winery in Coonawarra, South Australia, renowned for its bold, contemporary wines rooted in a rich lineage. Established in 1988 by Kym Tolley—a descendant of the Penfold and Tolley winemaking families (hence the name Penley)—Penley blends tradition with innovation. Kym, trained under Max Schubert at Penfolds, launched the estate with a focus on Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, earning early acclaim with the Phoenix Cabernet winning gold at the 1989 Adelaide Wine Show.
In 2015, after Kym’s retirement, his sisters Ang and Bec Tolley took the helm, steering Penley into a new era. They appointed Kate Goodman as chief winemaker in 2016, who was later named Halliday’s 2024 Winemaker of the Year. Under their leadership, Penley embraced sustainable practices, achieving certification from Sustainable Winegrowing Australia and progressing toward organic certification.
Penley’s 80-hectare vineyard lies on Coonawarra’s famed Terra Rossa soils, ideal for cultivating Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, and Cabernet Franc. The estate’s wines, including the flagship Phoenix Cabernet Sauvignon, are celebrated for their vibrant, terroir-driven character.
