The Weiss Erd vineyard from the village of Kostheim is the equivalent to a Grand Cru vineyard in Burgundy. The bright limestone soil gave the vineyard its “White Earth” name and contributes greatly to the acid structure in the wines. Grapes ripen slowly on this site and give the wine great volume and depth, with a definite minerality. The wine is full, with intense aromas of ripe fruit — yellow apple, peach and lime peel — supported by white pepper and wet stone. Elevated acidity and palate density suggests this is a white wine that will age gracefully.
Enjoy with white fish, shellfish and even sushi.
Third Party Reviews
The 2015 Rheingau Riesling Trocken Kostheim Weiss Erd VDP Grosse Lage opens with a clear, bright and deep, citrus-flavored bouquet with limestone flavors. Full-bodied, intense and piquant on the palate, this is a rich, round and silky textured, very elegant, dry Riesling. The wine is in balance, and has a long and expressive finish. There is mouthwatering salinity in the finish, but also a still somewhat stringent grip. Keep this excellent cru for a year or two before you start enjoying it for ten years.
