Tasting Notes
Tunella’s top wine, Biancosesto (Tre Bicchieri – Gambero Rosso 2024), is produced from equal parts Ribolla Gialla and Friulano, the two noble white native grapes of Friuli. The vines are raised in sandstone and marl soils known as “ponca” in the local dialect and are planted densely at 5,000 vines per hectare. Harvest is done by hand, and a cold maceration takes place over 2 days. The must is cold settled and inoculated with native yeast. It is then aged “sur lies” in 30HL Slavonian aak casks for 10 months with frequent batonnage prior to bottling. Biancosesto is celebrating its 20th anniversary with the 2022 vintage and once again it has received the highest award of TRE BICCCHIERE (along with high marks from other wine publications)!

Third Party Reviews
“I remember when this wine was first introduced at a time when up-and-coming Friuli Venezia Giulia was entering an unprecedented moment of excitement and enthusiasm. Biancosesto was part of the buzz. With this release, it celebrates its 20th anniversary (2003–2022). The Tunella 2022 Friuli Colli Orientali Biancosesto underlines its throwback modernist style with a very rich and creamy texture shaped by aging in large Slavonian oak casks. The blend is Friulano and Ribolla Gialla in equal parts, and the fruit benefits from marl and sandstone soils that develop freshness and sweet concentration. This wine is layered and rich with ripe fruit, apricot and pear. It’s a 360-degree expression with an extra dose of opulence to close. Production is 25,000 bottles.”

“This bright white features juicy pineapple, passion fruit and lychee notes accented by hints of grated ginger, ground cardamom, vanilla and white blossoms. Well-knit and lightly chalky in texture, with a focused, mineral-driven finish. Friulano and Ribolla Gialla. Drink now through 2029.”
