One member of our Small Winemakers Team has been mesmerized by the Andes mountains, and holds a personal understanding of the unique nature of Mendoza Malbec. With Mendoza Malbec you get a chance to try a classic, old world varietal (sourced from Bordeaux) yet produced in a significantly different terroir in South America. We thought it a good idea to provide a mixed case of two different styles of Argentinian Malbec, as presented by Bodega Septima
Bodega Septima was born in 2001 in the foothills of the Andes mountains. Sitting at an elevation of 1050 meters a.s.l, the hilly terrain and austere weather contribute to creating flavours and aromas that are unique to the Andean terroir
Séptima is part of a portfolio of wineries owned by Spain’s Codorniu (most renowned for their exceptional Cava’s). The winery name recognizes that this wonderful Andean bodega is the seventh (septima) project for Codorniu. Septima vineyards are located within the important Medoza valleys of Agrelo in Luján de Cuyo and Valle de Uco. The region’s distinctive and ideal microclimate, coupled with sustainable farming practices, produces wines of great quality and refined elegance.
2019 Septima Malbec :
This Malbec is matured mainly in stainless steel tanks with about 15% of the volume aged in French and American oak barrels. In the glass, the wine is a clean, bright red with purple streaks. This wine is modern, stylish and sophisticated with a strong personality!
The bouquet evokes an abundance of fruits such as plum and cherry. There are also notes of dried fig and violets. The tannins are soft and round on the palate with a nice, fruity finish.
Pair this wine with braised short ribs, peppered sirloin steak, meaty lasagna & hard cheese
2020 Septima Obra Malbec Reserva :
Obra Malbec is from the winery’s Reserva line which highlights terroir and grape selection. Handpicked lots from different vineyards located in Lujan de Cuyo and Valle de Uco give this wine a unique profile. The wine is aged in second-use French and American barrels for 10 months. The grapes from the district of Luján de Cuyo, bring out notes of plum, spicy red berries while the grapes from Valle de Uco, contribute aromas of flowers and blackberries.
On the palate it matches the vibrant nose along with refreshing acidity and round tannins leading to a balanced and persistent finish complimented with vanilla and dark chocolate.
Winemakers Paula Borgo and Leonardo Pisano note that in 2020 the weather patterns were dryer than usual with lower minimum temperatures than previous years. As a result, the vines were in perfect health and produced wines showing “freshness, sharpness and vibrancy of the grape variety”.
Pair this wine with grilled sirloin steak, pasta primavera, meat tacos, burgers with blue cheese, Monterey jack or Swiss cheese
“Bright red with vivid purple shades. Aromas of blackberry and glacé cherry with minty and violet notes combined with subtle hints of vanilla and spices give this wine its complexity and well-defined varietal typicity. It is fresh on the palate, soft attack followed by pleasant, silky and round tannins. Particularly strong notes of red berries and well-integrated wood make this a perfectly balanced wine with a distinctive finish.” 92 Points (www.jamessuckling.com)
