Tasting Notes
As the weather improves we yearn to fire up the outdoor grill for some al fresco dining. The Rhône Valley of France provides some of the best value wines for those who seek out rich and succulent reds. These wines, usually blends based on Grenache or Syrah, have the body and acidity to pair well with all manner of grilled meat. With this in mind, we have created a limited number of Rhone BBQ boxes. This mixed case will allow you to explore various southern Rhône appellations and flatter your BBQ feast at the same time!
$309/case of 12 bottles (average $25.75 a bottle)
2019 Domaine la Roubine, Sablet “La Grange des Brigières” :
The grapes for the 2019 “La Grange de Briguières” Sablet are sourced from vineyards averaging about 30 years of age, located on the “Briguières” hillsides which border the cru of Gigondas. The Grenache, Syrah and Cinsault grapes are all farmed organically and the wine is matured for 8 months in large oak barrels. This Sablet is deep, dense purple in the glass. Aromas come to mind of ripe figs, violets, tapenade, licorice and black pepper. On the palate the wine is rich, concentrated and full bodied with great structure and a long complex finish that signifies it will improve with bottle age.
2020 La Vitalis, Cairanne :
There is an aromatic richness to this Grenache-dominant blend (Grenache 60%, Syrah 20%, Carignan 10%, Cinsault 5%, Mourvèdre 5%) suggesting notes of roasted nuts, earth and violet alongside intensely ripe black fruit. Black-plum and cherry flavors are silky yet fresh, framed by finely textured, persistent tannins. A couple of our tasters pick up cedar and wood smoke aromas in the wine that flatter any steak you toss on the grill!
2017 Domaine de la Guicharde, Massif d’Uchaux “Cuvée Geneste” :
A 70/30 blend of Grenache and Syrah grapes that are grown organically, the Cuvée Genest shows a deep ruby red colour, with an almost purple hue. A complex and rich mix of aromas, including black cherry, tapenade (black olive puree), crab apple, plum, cranberry and stewed strawberry fruit, with subtle licorice and mint. On the palate, the wine mirrors the nose, although the fruits tend to show a little more of a black nature than the pretty nose would imply. Some salty, black licorice notes on the finish, as well as a bit of alcoholic weight (14.5%). The 2017 vintage is drinking perfectly now.
2020 Domaine Saint Michel, Côtes du Rhône :
An outstanding cuvée from a small estate run by the Boyer family from their Medieval fortified house in the Rhone valley. Made from Grenache, Syrah and Carignan, it is fresh and fruity wine with alluring notes of raspberry preserve, violet, dried thyme and rosemary. Baked black-cherry and grape-jelly flavors are hedonistic and dense. The supple, silky texture is contrasted by pleasantly ripe gripping tannins and lingering notes of earth and peppery spice on the finish. Great with barbeque, but would also pair well with meat sauced pastas or pizza.
