Tasting Notes
This mixed case is a great way to explore Italian, regional differences for this popular varietal. Featured here are exceptional examples from Veneto, Alto Adige and Friuli. A case contains four (4) bottles of each of the following Pinot Grigio’s:
Luigi Righetti 2019 (Veneto DOC)
Righetti’s shows good mid-palate weight and fruit concentration. The nose has floral aromas with overtones of pistachios and just a hint of honey. The palate is soft and round with a long, clean citrus finish. Starting in 2017, Pinot Grigio from Veneto has the option of being labeled as DOC, and Righetti chose to do so as a means of guaranteeing quality.
Kupelwieser 2019 (Alto Adige DOC)
From Italy’s northernmost, but highly acclaimed region of Alto Adige, one gets to experience the best of two worlds, with Mediterranean and Alpine climatic conditions coming into play. This wine shows crisp and refreshing Pinot Grigio handcrafted by award-winning winemaker Peter Zemmer. The grapes are sourced from vineyards on the valley floor of the ‘Lowlands’ of Alto Adige. Zemmer’s low-yield approach in the vineyards results in a complex white wine which reveals flavors of citrus and tree fruits with nuances of mineral, all showcased by a lengthy finish.
Tunella 2018 (Colli Orientali del Fruili DOC)
The wine has an intense straw yellow color, evolving to a richer yellow with aging.
Spring wild-flower and honeydew-melon aromas come together in the glass. On the juicy rounded palate, tangy acidity accompanies Granny Smith apple and yellow pear before an almond close. Score 89, Wine Enthusiast, Dec 2019
