Villa Mattielli Valpolicella Ripasso “San Giacomo” 2019:
“Ripasso” Valpolicella undergo a secondary fermentation on the lees (pressings) of the Amarone, adding depth and complexity to the finished wine. Villa Mattielli Ripasso “San Giacomo” is produced from traditional Veronese grapes that have been grown in the pergola system and are harvested by hand. The wine is matured in French oak barriques (80%) and stainless steel (20%) for 10 months.

The nose on this deep garnet wine displays intense dark cherry and red fruit aromas with hints of fruitcake, baking spice, cedar and vanilla. The wine is full and rich in the mouth with a lingering finish of dried fruits and soft tannins. We found the 2019 version to be quite rich and concentrated, staying true to the excellent climatic conditions of the vintage. Traditional Veronese Bigoli pasta with a duck ragu would make an excellent pairing!

Carlin de Paolo Cisterna d’Asti Superiore 2019:
Cisterna d’Asti is the DOC region in Piemonte dedicated to wine produced from the Croatina variety. The “superiore” designation applies to wines of a minimum 12% alc. (in this case 14.5% alc.).

Carlin de Paolo’s Cisterna d’Asti Superiore comes from vines averaging 30 years of age and was matured in 25 Hl French oak barrels for 18 months. This period allowed a bouquet to develop that is intense, distinctive and harmonious. A very deep bluish red colour, the wine is medium bodied, with bold flavours of red berry fruit (raspberry and strawberry) complemented with white pepper and almonds on the finish.  The acid backbone of this wine makes it a great accompaniment to cured meats, Cotoletta Milanese or meat stuffed agnolotti.

Montepeloso “A Quo” 2020:
The “Super Tuscan” wines of Proprietor Fabio Chiarelloto are some of the most highly praised in the region. The 2020 “A Quo” is another gorgeous offering from Montepeloso. Composed of 40% Sangiovese and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, with small additions of Montepulciano, Marselan and Alicante Bouschet, the wine was fermented and matured in French oak barrels for 9 months

The wine exhibits a dark, brooding purple colour. The nose is dominated by black cherry and damson plum, with Tuscan herb and mineral notes. The palate shows nice tension with expressions of black fruits and forest floor, all in a medium to full bodied style that is so appealing. Delicious now but will cellar nicely for up to a decade. A grilled T-bone steak would be a classic accompaniment.
