Tasting Notes
Founded in 1551, Codorniu is the oldest winery in Spain and one of the longest continuously operating companies in the world. It has undergone many challenges and changes over the centuries, but one of the most significant was in 1659 when Anna di Codorniu married Miquel Raventós and brought together two of the great winemaking families of Spain. In homage to his wife’s family Miquel, in spite of traditional practice, kept the company name Codorniu. More than 200 years later, their descendant, Josep Raventós, would go on to become the creator of cava using the traditional method of fermentation in the bottle.
Over this long and illustrious history, the Codorniu company has gone beyond Cava and now owns and operates numerous wineries in Spain and around the world. Today, we highlight wines from their Spanish properties in The Penedes (Cava), Costers del Segre and Rioja.
Anna di Codorniu Cava Brut Reserva N/V – A brilliant yellow colour with green reflections showing fine, persistent bubbles. The nose displays citrus and tropical fruit notes that are enriched by complex aromas of toasted brioche. On the palate the wine is dry, creamy and persistent which makes it a very versatile wine at the table.
Codorniu Limited Edition Brut Rosé N/V – A lovely salmon colour in the glass showing fine and delicate bubbles. Gentle fragrances of cherry, strawberry and raspberry jam are accompanied by complex brioche undertones lifted by crisp fresh citrus. It is very full in the mouth with a splendid bubbly sensation that fills the whole palate.
Codorniu ZERO N/V – This de-alcoholized sparkling white wine displays stone fruit and floral notes with a creamy, persistent mousse. Not too sweet, this alcohol-free wine shows a distinct vinous note that is both fresh and invigorating. Serve child as an aperitif or with sushi.
Raimat Albariño 2024 – A pale yellow colour with greenish hints, the bouquet is intense with aromas of white flowers, mangoes, melon and grapefruit. The taste is fresh and citrusy at first, becoming more voluminous in the mid-palate and finishing with a long impression of melon, white flower and spice. A certain creaminess to the texture of the wine is achieved by extended lees contact with a small percentage being barrel aged for 10 months.
Raimat Rosada 2023 – A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (55%) and Tempranillo (45%) both of which are well suited to grow in the warm, dry climate of the Costers del Segre. A subtle pink rosé, the wine shows aromas of strawberries, cherries along with floral notes of roses and hint of grapefruit. It is light to medium bodied with pleasant fresh flavours of red berries and citrus and a lingering dry finish.
Bodegas Bilbainas “Viña Pomal” Rioja Crianza 2021 – Produced from 100% Tempranillo, Viña Pomal Crianza has a fresh, intense nose dominated by aromas of juicy black cherry, Mediterranean herbs along with pleasant licorice notes. Vanilla and toasted flavours come from its 12 months in oak. The palate is balanced, soft and displays considerable concentration. Good structure and well integrated tannins, make it food friendly but also very enjoyable to drink on its own.
