La Togata is a small family company with vineyards in the south of Montalcino. The property is owned by the women of the Angel family: Stephania, Vanessa and Azzurra, with Jeanneth, the mother, also managing the company.
The vineyards are all over 20 years of age. Jacopus is made grapes from vineyards in the South East and South West of Montalcino that are partly young and partly very old. They produce a more classic style of Brunello as opposed to the more modern style typical of La Togata. It is aged only in large Slavonian barrels of 40 Hl for 3 years.
The wine is complex, with a mix of cherry, currant, earth, leather and tobacco aromas. The palate is lively, fresh, elegant and well-balanced. The tannic structure is pronounced but they are soft and silky.
In its youth, pair with rare beef, mishroom risotto, ribollita or hard sheep cheeses
Third Party Reviews
The aromas of plums and orange peel are very subtle and enticing. Medium to full body and firm, super silky tannins with ultra-fine texture and a long and focused finish. Just a hint of attractive bitterness at the end. Try after 2021. Score 93, James Suckling, November 2019
The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino ‘Jacopus’ from La Togata opens to an inviting aromatic profile of red berry fruits, raspberries, currants and wild flowers. The palate is medium-bodied and structured with soft tannins, yet taut and vibrant, ending with a lovely luminous finish that lingers nicely. Score 92, International Wine Report, March 2020
