Tasting Notes

Silex is a selection of Villaudiere’s oldest vines planted on clay-flint hillsides of Ménétréol-sous-Sancerre and Sancerre. This area has rare silex soils with a higher proportion of flint which continues into the communes of Pouilly Fumé. Grown sustainably without herbicides, this rare terroir gives a classic Sauvignon Blanc remarkable ageing potential.

The 2023 Domaine de la Villaudiere Sancerre “Silex” is an elegant yet expressive wine with an intense aromatic bouquet that was encouraged by 5 months aging on the lees. A clear pale-yellow, it shows notes of white flowers, bright citrus fruit, green herbs and a touch of smoke. The palate is rounded, rich and well-structured underpinned by a persistent mineral note. This wine has remarkable charisma and age-worthiness.

Food Pairings

Goes well with shellfish, lobster à l’Armoricaine, or trout with almonds.
