Tasting Notes
This is a mixed case of 3 wines, with two (2) bottles of each in the case. Each wine is an exceptional yet distinct example of the power and beauty of Tuscany’s Sangiovese varietal.
Biondi Santi 2018 Sassoalloro
100% BBS11 Sangiovese clone – the clone developed generations ago by the Biondi Santi family to produce forward, yet long aging, well-structured wines and the backbone to the family’s Brunellos.
The wine has a brilliant ruby red colour with violet tones. The nose is fresh, with red cherry, dried herbs, floral notes of sweet violets, a mild oakiness with a balsamic spiciness coming through. The palate shows purity of fruit, layers of ripe, sour cherry, dried herbs, some pepper, with a long, lingering finish. This is a fine, savoury wine which is drinking well now but will reward patient cellaring (estate suggests 25 years).
Montepeloso 2018 Eneo
A blend of 55% Sangiovese, 25% Montepulciano, 15% Alicante and 5% Malvasia Nera grown biodynamically with natural yeasts and no filtration. This wine has a colour of dark cherries. The nose is opulent and intense with predominantly black fruit. The pronounced minerality is accompanied by toasted aromas of hardwood and spices. The palate is silky and well balanced with an extremely long length. Scored 95 by Wine Advocate and 94 by Antonio Galloni
La Togata 2015 Brunello di Montalcino
Bright cherry and strawberry aromatics, refreshing floral and mineral tones, yet restrained. Soft textures giving way to fleshy ripe red fruits and a mix of savory and sweet herbs, with brisk acids, inner leather and floral tones. The finish is long, displaying staining dark fruits and sweet florals, and hints of fine tannin taper off.
