We have written previously about the wonderful wine regions of California, especially Napa Valley. Arguably California’s best-known wine region, Napa Valley is home to some of the most delectable, high-quality wines that California has to offer. It is also where you will find the famous Caymus Vineyard.
In this article, we are highlighting this prestige vineyard and the family that runs it. Read further about its history, wine offerings and how to buy Caymus wine.
The History Of Caymus And The Wagner Family
Both the Caymus winery and the family that run it, the Wagner family, have a long-held tradition of putting their stamp on the Napa Valley region. Although the vineyards themselves have only been in operation since the early 1970s, the Wagner family tradition of producing wine laid the foundations for the successful vineyard that Caymus has become.
Since the early 1900s, the Wagner family has been part of the California wine industry. They planted their first vineyard in Rutherford in 1915, growing grapes mostly for bulk wine production.
After purchasing the land they currently own in 1972, Chuck Wagner and his parents continued the family tradition and launched the Caymus Vineyard winery. In that same year, they produced their first vintage which consisted of 240 cases of California Cabernet Sauvignon. Since then, they have steadily increased their production and diversified their offerings.
The winery takes its name from the original Mexican land grant, Rancho Caymus, awarded to George Yount (first permanent Euro-American settler in Napa Valley) in 1836. The grant included the areas known today as Yountville, Oakville and Rutherford, prime growing areas producing top quality wines.
Caymus: The Wines Produced
There are three main labels produced in the Caymus Vineyards. Two Cabernet Sauvignons – “Napa Valley” and “Special Selection” and a Napa Valley Zinfandel. Each wine in itself offers distinct aroma and flavour profiles. These Caymus wines are complex, showing a balance between textured tannins and round mouthfeel.
The Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is certainly the most well-known grape varietal to come out of the Caymus winery. Having been the focus of the Wagner family for decades, they have truly mastered the production of this wine.
The family continues to make Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon that is as delightful in its youth as in its maturity. They constantly offer powerful, layered aromas and flavours including cocoa, dark berries and cassis.
Caymus Special Selection
The Caymus Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon is the flagship wine of the Wagner family and it’s not hard to see why. This exceptional wine offers a rich, voluptuous and intense mouthfeel and a long, juicy finish.
Tasting the Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon, you will notice how it yields profound aromatics of blueberries, black cherries, boysenberry, milk chocolate and licorice.
Not to be upstaged by its rival red grape varietals, Zinfandel is another example of a high-quality Caymus wine that many wine aficionados have praised over the years. Sourced from the Butala vineyards in St Helena, the grapes are of exceptional quality.
Blended with a small amount of Petit Sirah, Caymus’ medium-bodied Zinfandel wine offers notes of ripe blackberry, fig, toasted brown spices, rhubarb, dark chocolate and subtle oak vanilla. Known for its bright acidity, this Caymus wine offers an amazing lingering finish.
New Areas Of Production
In recent years, the Wagner family has expanded their production areas to also include regions such as the Suisan Valley in California and the Mendoza wine region in Argentina. As this traditional winemaking producing family continues to improve their winemaking techniques and expand their reach in the international wine industry, we are confident that more wine connoisseurs across the world will come to respect their wines as much as we do here at The Small Winemakers Collection.
