The Horse Heaven Hills is an eastern Washington AVA contained within the large Columbia Valley AVA but actually located between the Columbia River and the Yakima Valley AVA to the north. Though not as well known as the larger valley regions, Horse Heaven has over 6,000 acres of vines, two-thirds of which are red, producing about 25% of the state’s annual crush. Planting here started in 1972.
