An Introdution to Carricante

Carricante is an increasingly important white wine variety in Sicily where it is the mainstay of DOC Etna Bianco. As the reputation of Etna wines continues to grow, Acreage of Carricante is expanding too, from the meagre 250 acres counted in 2008. Etna Bianco is quite often a blend of Carricante, Catarratto and Inzolia but Carricante’s importance is underscored by the legal requirement for it to be 60% of the Bianco blend and 80% of Etna Bianco Superiore. This notable Sicilian grape gives off enticing aromas of citrus, specifically grapefruit and orange and their blossoms, white peach and fennel. Acidity, as with so many southern grapes, is refreshingly high and, most importantly, helps Carricante express the minerality of Etna’s volcanic soils poetically.
