An Introduction to Monterey

Monterey is a long thin appellation that runs along the Salinas river from Monterey Bay inland for almost 150 kms. The valley acts as a natural funnel, drawing cool Pacific breezes inland. This impact is most strongly felt closer to the ocean and by the time the valley hits the San Luis Obispo border its effects are negligible. Close to the coast, where the cooling breezes are most evident, some of the best Pinot Noirs in California are made. The cool days and long autumns allow grapes to fully ripen yet retain vibrant acidity and intense aromatics.
