Mediterranean Marvel from Domaine Magellan

Sold Out

When Bruno Lafon bought this old estate in the village of Magalas with his sister-in-law, Sylvie Legros, the property was a collection of run down vineyards, planted with a wide variety of grapes. Lafon has transformed the vineyards, bringing his experience as an established grower in Burgundy, and now cultivates 13 varieties of vines that are best matched to the local conditions (and traditions). One of the most interesting vineyards under his care is located in Pézenas. Pézenas is a sub-appellation of the Languedoc in southern France. It is one of several Languedoc sub-appellations, all of which are located on the coastal plains between Narbonne in the west, Montpellier in the centre and Nimes in the east. The climate here is typically Mediterranean, with long hot summers and relatively mild winters helping to bring the grapes to full ripeness. The Pézenas title is reserved exclusively for red wines made from Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre. The local, but less respected varieties Carignan and Cinsaut were once widely used here but are now limited to a maximum of 30% in any Languedoc-Pézenas wine. On offer this week is the 2013 Domaine Magellan Coteaux du Languedoc Pézenas. This wine is a co-fermented blend of almost equal parts of Syrah and Grenache which is normally impossible as Syrah usually ripens a week or two before Grenache. But the Syrah that Lafon planted on the north face of a small hill on the estate, exposed to the Mistral in comparatively indirect sun, ripens a few days later than normal (Bruno says it’s the finest Syrah on the estate). And the Grenache he planted on the south face, protected from the wind and happily baking in the the brilliant Languedoc sun, ripens a few days earlier than normal. Consequnetly, Bruno is able to harvest the entire vineyard at once, and ferment the Syrah and Grenache together in a single tank. The location of this vineyard is quite picturesque, with uninterupted views to the South of the silvery Mediterranean glistening on the horizon. Bruno took me on a long walk through this vineyard pointing out the many unique features of the terroir. The 2013 Domaine Magellan Coteaux du Languedoc Pézenas is available for immediate delivery. We only have 40 cases of this mouth-watering wine available. The previous vintage of this wine SOLD OUT quickly. A Superior Super Tuscan

Sold Out

From the beginning, Suvereto’s challenge to Bolgheri (as Tuscany’s premier source of Super Tuscans) has come from just two adjacent estates: Montepeloso and Tua Rita (both of whom we happen to represent). The properties enjoy two of the best terroirs in Italy:  Montepeloso on a gentle hillside of chalky gravel and clay, and Tua Rita in heavier clay below.  Climatically warmer than interior Tuscany – and possessing an uncanny similarity to the famed slopes of St. Emilion – this locale naturally limits yields and is capable of producing wines with great concentration. Under the direction of the original owners, Montepeloso established itself as one of Tuscany’s most impressive estates, earning a coveted five-star rating from American wine guru Robert Parker.  In 1998 the estate was sold to Fabio Chiarelotto, a Swiss-Italian religious scholar and academic historian.  While Chiarelotto was entranced by the wines being produced, he was convinced that they fell short of the terroir’s full potential. A unique site is important for the production of great wine; just as critical is an inspired winemaker. The introspective Chiareletto had little interest in the opinions and guidance of fashionable enologists; instead, he was determined to follow his own path.  Within a year of the purchase, Chiarelotto embarked on a dramatic and complete overhaul of the vineyards – retraining or regrafting thousands of vines.  He was willing to sacrifice production for a few vintages if it would result in greater wines.  In the cellar, Chiarelotto experimented with ways to soften the tannins, refine the aromatics and better integrate the oak.  With each succeeding vintage, he is getting closer to his ideal. On offer this week is the 2012 Montepeloso Eneo.   The estate’s basic Rosso was renamed Eneo for the 2000 vintage.  This wine has emerged as something special in its own right since Chiarelotto’s arrival, and the new name celebrates that fact.  It remains primarily Sangiovese and Montepulciano, with smaller amounts of Alicante and Marselan, and is aged in 2nd and 3rd year French barrique.  It remains a pure and powerful, yet elegant example from this heralded zone of Tuscany. The 2012 Montepeloso Eneo is available for immediate delivery.  There are a scant 30 cases of this beautifully crafted wine on offer.  To order please e-mail or call us. This wine is HIGHLY recommended!   2012 Montepeloso Eneo $64.75 btl / $388.50 cs (case of 6 x 750ml)This wine has a deep, rich colour and is almost opaque in the glass. The nose is opulent and intense with predominantly black fruit in evidence. The pronounced minerality is accompanied by toasted aromas of hardwood and spices, licorice and leather. The palate is silky and well balanced with an extremely long finish.  This wine is absolutely stunning!Drink:  Now – 2025Food Pairing: Grilled red meats; poultry; duckAccolades:An alluring combination of black currant, black cherry, licorice, spice and mineral melds seamlessly with the firm structure in this powerful, harmonious red.  Long and approachable now, but should cruise for several more years in the cellar. Great Value Napa Chardonnay

In this time of multi-million dollar vineyard estates and celebrity winemaking consultants, when it seems that financial backing has replaced skill as the key success in enology, it is rare that a simple idea can give birth to wines that stand out for flavour and balance, rather than pedigree alone.  A collaboration between veteran winemaker Philip Zorn and longtime wine executive Brent Shortridge, Waterstone Winery was formed in 2000 when the two men were introduced and discovered a shared interest in creating luxury wines at affordable prices.  Bringing together their previously established relationships with Napa Valley growers and vintners, the pair set out to develop balanced wines of varietal character through intelligent sourcing.  Preferring to focus on the wine itself rather than the accumulation of land and facilities, Zorn and Shortridge own no vineyards themselves, nor do they own the facility where their wines are made.  Dedicated winemaking, strong relationships with top growers and long-term grape contracts are the keys to Waterstone’s quality and success. The Chardonnay grapes for this wine were grown in the Carneros region, where soils are dense, shallow, of low to moderate fertility, and high in clay content.  While the soils lead to low yields, the region’s maritime climate allows a longer growing season; the end result is balanced colour, flavour and acidity in the harvested grapes.  This Chardonnay is produced from two vineyards:  the Vallejo Vineyard in northwestern Carneros and the Truchard Vineyard in northeastern Carneros.  Both vineyards are under long-term contracts, providing consistency from vintage to vintage. On offer this week is the 2013 Waterstone Chardonnay.   This producer is a shining example of what can be accomplished in the wine business without a huge capital expenditure.  All you need it seems is a good idea, a long-term source of top quality fruit, a talented winemaker making consistently superior wines, and a passion to succeed – simple, right?  Despite the sharp rise in prices of California wines due to the drop in the value of the Loonie, this wine still represents tremendous value as the wine reviews below attest. The 2013 Waterstone Chardonnay is available for immediate delivery.  We only have 30 cases of this mouth-watering Chardonnay available.  To order please e-mail or call Geoff at 416-463-4677. 2013 Waterstone Chardonnay $32.00 btl / $384.00 cs (case of 12 x 750ml) This Chardonnay features bright, concentrated citrus, pear, green apple and nectarine fruit, with nicely balanced oak adding richness to the palate. The wine lingers on the palate, and has the structure and acidity to provide for good longevity. Drink:  Now – 2020 Food Pairing: Fish, seafood, white meat, salad Accolades: “This is a floral, zesty and vibrant white wine, given six months in French oak, half of it new. With a complex hit of briny salt and citrus, it flirts between layers of savory and sweet, finding just the right balance of structure and acidity.”  Wine Enthusiast Magazine, April 2016   91 points “Bright and juicy with racy acidity and creamy tropical fruit; fresh and showing …

Organic and Biodynamic Chateauneuf-du-Pape

Sold Out

Châteauneuf-du-Pape is the largest and most important wine appellation in the southern Rhône.  It is home to more than 3,200 hectares of vineyards and over 80 growers; more wine is produced in Châteauneuf than the whole of the northern Rhône put together.  The vineyards are bounded to the west by the Rhône river and to the east by the A7 autoroute. Châteauneuf-du-Pape was the first ever Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée established in France, in 1932.   Small, rounded rocks from the ancient river bed known as galets roulés are a key aspect of what makes Châteauneuf -du-Pape wines so distinctive, with the rocks reflecting heat back into the vines at night, thus increasing ripeness and reducing acidity. The gloriously rich red wines, redolent of the heat and herbs of the south, are enhanced by the complexity which comes from blending several grape varieties. Fourteen are permitted for reds; Grenache typically dominates with Syrah and Mourvèdre in support. Domaine Pierre Andre is a family-owned estate in the village of Courthezon, (between Orange and Avignon) in the region of the Controlled Appellation Chateauneuf-du-Pape.  The terroir is much diversified: smooth stones, clay, sand and limestone.  The climate is excellent for the vines: typically Mediterranean with the well-known wind “The Mistral” keeping the weather clear and sunny, thus reducing rainfalls and fogs.   The estate is composed of 16 hectares in AOC Chateauneuf-du-Pape.   Less than 1 hectare is dedicated to the white production. The vineyard has been organically farmed since 1980; the first estate to initiate organic farming in the Appellation Chateauneuf-du-Pape.  Since 1992, they have also been certified as Biodynamic.  The cellars of the domaine are some of the cleanest in Chateauneuf.  The cellar has been renovated recently and seems very well-equipped to make the best natural Chateauneuf. On offer this week is the 2011 Domaine Pierre Andre Chateauneuf-du-Pape. I had the great pleasure of visiting the winery last October.  I tasted four vintages:  2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011.  They all share a common core of pure ripe fruit, with balanced acidity and fine-grained tannin that only old vines carefully managed can produce. This is an exceptionally well-made Chateauneuf-du-Pape from a good vintage. The 2011 Domaine Pierre Andre Chateauneuf-du-Pape is available for immediate delivery.  We only have 15 cases of this superb Chateauneuf-du-Pape available.  To order please e-mail, call us at 416-463-4677, or use our online order form. 2011 Domaine Pierre Andre Chateauneuf-du-Pape$76.20 btl / $457.20 cs (case of 6 x 750ml) The wine is a blend of 80% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 8% Mourvèdre, 2% Cinsault, Muscardin, Counoise, Picpoul and Vaccarese. The nose is elegant and soft with an ethereal aroma of crushed red berries (raspberry, cranberry and strawberry), truffles, warmed white pepper and black licorice. The palate is soft and supple on the initial attack, but the rich ripe fruit builds and is well-framed by fine tannins and fresh acidity. The finish is long and chewy. Drink:  Now – 2028+ Food Pairing: Enjoy with Cassoulet, braised beef or lamb, or anything with duck

South American Sauvignon Blanc to Toast Spring

Sold Out

The story of Casa Marin begins with its founder, owner and chief winemaker Maria Luz Marin’s dream – to produce top quality, world class wines.  In 2000, against the advice of friends and colleagues she decided to establish her winery in Lo Abarca, a sleepy little town in the San Antonio Valley west of Santiago.  Despite warnings about problems with the chosen location, she has been successful in creating a winery whose bottlings have been praised throughout the world and have helped position Chile in a distinct light with its high quality, high value wines. The town of Lo Abarca is just 6 kilometres from the cold Pacific Ocean and is covered by a constant morning fog during both the summer and winter months.  It’s also a very windy area with cool temperatures during the grape growing season.  However, these conditions make the vines produce superior quality fruit.  The harvests are not abundant but the vines that grow here are strong with healthy grapes and greater flavour and mineral concentration that add unique qualities and character to the wines. On offer this week is the 2015 Casa Marin Cartagena Sauvignon Blanc.  I had the privilege of visiting this winery a few years ago.  After tasting the entire range of wines poured by winemaker Maria Luz Marin,  I had to agree with the wine guru Robert Parker who has suggested that Casa Marin is the best producer of white wine in Chile.  This is an exquisitely crafted wine – perfect to toast the arrival of Spring!  To my palate this wine shows the acidity, herbal, and mineral complexity of a Sancerre with the fruity exuberance of a classic New Zealand “Savvy”.   I HIGHLY recommend this wine. The 2015 Casa Marin Cartagena Sauvignon Blanc is available for immediate delivery.  We only have 40 cases of this superb Sauvignon Blanc available.  To order e-mail or call at 416-463-4677. 2015 Cartagena Sauvignon Blanc $19.95 btl / $239.40 cs (case of 12 x 750ml) This Sauvignon Blanc is from the second label Cartagena which is intended to provide a value counterpoint to the premium estate labels. It is an excellent example of Sauvignon Blanc. Pale straw in colour. On the nose, bright, fresh and lifted with distinctive melon, kiwi and grassy notes. Clean and beautifully structured with hints of citrus and honey and fine balanced acidity. An admirable effort! Marvelous Montepulciano d’Abruzzo

La Quercia

The region of Abruzzo lies along Italy’s east central coast, where it meets the Adriatic Sea, southeast of Tuscany.  It is one of Italy’s most mountainous and isolated regions.  The Apennine Mountains here reach to about 9,000 feet, their highest in Italy.  A rough and rustic region, Abruzzo is sprinkled with mountains, valleys and gorges all bathed in verdant foliage.  Abruzzo boasts the greatest number of national parks and preserves in the country. Warm, sunny hillsides provide ideal conditions for cultivating grapes. Unfortunately, many producers focus on quantity not quality.  Abruzzo’s average yield is the highest in Italy.  Less than 20% of the wine is DOC. And yet, as with most of Italy, a renaissance of quality is taking place, and there are an increasing number of producers, such as La Quercia who are leading that quality movement.  Their wines are very good yet still reasonably priced. La Quercia is a small winery with about 12 hectares under vine and 3 hectares of olives, located on a windy hillside with a vista of the Adriatic Sea.  The winery is keen to respect nature and the environment in order to produce the best wines possible with the least amount of harm. Quercia means oak tree which beyond being a beautiful and majestic tree is also a symbol for strength and longevity.  All grapes are hand picked and pressed within two hours of harvest.  During cultivation and processing, treatments are kept to a minimum in order to allow the drinker to find a reflection of the place of origin and its peculiarities in their glass. On offer this week is the 2012 La Quercia Montpulciano.  This is another of my personal favourites – an incredibly undervalued and versatile wine.  It will accompany a wide range of foods and is delicious by itself.  This wine is highly recommended! The 2012 La Quercia Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is available for immediate delivery.  Order by email or call 416-463-4677 2012 Montepulciano d’Abruzzo $20.50 btl / $246.00 cs (case of 12 x 750ml) This Montepulciano is a great example of what happens when you match low-yield winemaking expertise with a prolific growing zone, and constantly cut, cut, cut back the vines. Made by winemaker Antonio Lamona, the result is one of the best quality, most expressive and balanced Montepulcianos around. Full-bodied, smooth, and packed with notes of blackberry, wild cherry, chocolate and spice. Drink:  Now – 2020 Food Pairing: Try with olive tapenade, pork chops with sautéed onions and chicken kebabs, as well as eggplant Parmesan, lasagna or pizza Accolades: This creamy red is well-balanced and accessible, with flavors of pureed cherry and raspberry fruit, accented by herbed black olive, mocha and spice hints. REDS – Old vine splendour from California

Tierra Divina

In the nearly three decades that I have been involved in the wine trade I have been fortunate to have met many of the icons of the business. One of the most interesting characters has certainly been Patrick Campbell. A practicing Zen buddhist; semi professional cellist; socialist philosopher and brilliant winemaker, I have enjoyed the fruits of his labours for some time – first with Laurel Glen Vineyards a legendary Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard and now with his Tierra Divina Vineyards (both in Lodi, California and Mendoza, Argentina). Campbell is a champion of so-called family “heritage vineyards”. By definition, these are vineyards that have been tended by three or more generations utilizing sustainable agricultural practices. Old vines that can grow “naturally,” set just the right amount of crop and canopy without a lot of interference – like irrigation, leaf thinning, cluster dropping, etc. – are what sets Lodi apart, according to Campbell. This is why he chooses to work in Lodi and Mendoza (where he works primarily with Malbec grapes):  “in both places, I find old vineyards, old farming families, less ego…” But these “heritage vineyards are not good because they are old,” Campbell reminds us. “They are old because they are good; roots run deep and guard them against variables of each year – hot weather, cold weather, drought, rain, rot. Over time, heritage vineyards ‘learn’ long-term survival skills. They generally produce very moderate crops, but the fruit invariably has a flavor integrity and depth that younger vines cannot produce without a lot of intervention.” On offer this week is the 2013 Reds. This wine begins in some of the oldest vineyards in California. The Carignan vines are 130+ years old, Zinfandel is 90+ years old, and just a splash of a youngster Petite Sirah (only 50+ years old) is added for colour and depth. The wine is fermented in steel, and there is a minimum use of oak in the cellar to keep the flavours and aromas pure fruit. The 2013 Reds is available for immediate delivery.  To order, please e-mail , phone, or use our online order form . To your continued good health! 2013 Reds $21.75 btl / $261.00 cs (case of 12 x 750ml) Deep rich colour; quite saturated and concentrated. On the nose a melange of ripe black and red fruits. In the mouth the wine is medium bodied, soft and round with dark berries, spice, and touches of bramble. Impresseive effort! Drink: Now – 2018 Food Pairing: Will drink nicely with rich pasta dishes, burgers, pizza – even curry!

Delightful Pinot Noir that will not leave you penniless!

Ever wonder why Pinot Noir is so expensive when compared to other wine varietals?  Why is it so difficult to find a decent Pinot Noir under $30-40?  The main reason is that Pinot Noir is a very thin-skinned grape making it susceptible to the weather:  if it is too hot the grapes will shrivel; if it is too cold, the grapes will not ripen; if it is too wet the skins will split, or worse mold will attack the tightly packed grape clusters. That thin skin also limits the amount of flavour that can be imparted into the wine (much of the flavour from red wine comes from the contact with the skins during fermentation), so in order to maximize flavour, many Pinot makers drop fruit (cut off grape bunches before maturity) to further concentrate the remaining bunches. This leads to lower per acre crop yields, which raises the overall price of the fruit, and hence the wine. For some reason, the demarcation line seems to fall somewhere in the $30-40 range for Pinot Noir.  Wines at or above this price seem to possess many of the characteristics that make Pinot Noir magical:  fruit, depth, complexity and an earthiness that helps to define terroir (or, a sense of place).  Less expensive Pinot Noir usually lacks this profile. However, there are exceptions to most rules, and the 2013 Mandolin Pinot Noir is one of them. The grapes for this Pinot Noir were sourced from vineyards in the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA of Monterey County, where high winds, dry days, and bay fogs create a cool, but very long, growing season.  These growing conditions are ideal for cool-climate grapes such as Pinot Noir, and lead to full, forward fruit flavours and ideal acidity.  Grapes were harvested at a desirable balance of sugar and acid, and the wine was fermented in small open-top tanks.  The wine completed malolactic fermentation in French oak barrels, where it aged for 8 months prior to bottling. The 2013 Mandolin Pinot Noir is available for immediate delivery. This is a finely crafted, smooth, round, flavourful example of Pinot Noir at an affordable price – well worth a try!   To order, please e-mail or telephone our office. To your continued good health! 2013 Mandolin Pinot Noir $21.60 btl / $259.20 cs (case of 12 x 750ml) Beautiful brick colour.  The wine is light to medium-bodied with raspberry, cherry aromas on the nose with hints of spice, leather and cedar.  Soft and round in the mouth with a clean, balanced finish.  The tannins have largely resolved themselves.  A very pleasant bottle of wine! Drink:  Now – 2018 Food Pairing: Pairs well with mushroom ragout; chicken; turkey; salmon

Great Pinot from Sancerre

Sold Out

Many of you know and love to drink Sancerre – a wine growing region located in the central vineyards of the Loire Valley in France. Most wine drinkers are familiar with the whites that dominate the region. Sancerre Blanc is always made from Sauvignon Blanc grapes. These crisp, clean, and refreshing wines have become very popular and with good reason. In general they tend to be great quality for their price point and the best among them set the bar for Sauvignon Blanc globally. What many don’t know is that while this area is heavily dominated by white wine, a respectable amount of red wine is also produced (about 20% of the region’s production). To be labeled Sancerre Rouge, a wine must be 100% Pinot Noir. As a result of the overwhelming popularity of Sancerre blanc, these Pinots have been a hard sell for the region. Much of the red wine produced is sold locally. Until recently most producers treated their reds pretty much as an afterthought. Now Pinot Noir is getting serious attention. The wines may not yet plumb the depths of, say, Vôsne-Romanée or Chambertin, but the best ought to make Burgundy take notice. Sancerre rouge is getting better every day. On offer this week is the 2012 Domaine de la Villaudiere Cuvee Heritage. This wine is 100% Pinot Noir. We have offered the Sauvignon Blanc from this producer in the past to much critical acclaim. We are delighted to now offer the rare and delicious Pinot Noir from this esteemed winery. This is a tremendous example of this wine and the modern style that is setting the standard for reds from this region. This is well worth a try! The 2012 Domaine de la Villaudiere Cuvee Heritage is available for immediate delivery. We only have 20 cases of this rare gem on offer. To order, please e-mail or telephone our office. To your continued good health! 2012 Cuvee Heritage $35.95 btl / $215.70 cs (case of 6 x 750ml) Bright, deep, ruby hue. On the nose the wine opens with a harmonious blend of grilled, smoked and toasted aromas complexed by fruity notes (ripe dark berries). These aromas follow through on the broad palate. The wine has a wonderful soft, silky texture. A beautifully structured wine with an enticing finish. Drink: Now – 2020+ Food Pairing: The perfect accompaniment with a cut of beef, roast chicken or a platter of cheeses Accolades: High in acidity as well as red berry fruits, this is a wine in development. Its fruits are all there, fresh and rich. Light tannins and touches of wood add a structure. It will need time; drink from 2016.  The Wine Enthusiast, October 2014, 89 points

Great Ripasso from Luigi Righetti

Valpolicella is a fruity, complex red wine from the Valpolicella viticultural zone of Veneto.  Because Valpolicella’s wines generally lean towards the lighter end of the scale, for centuries the local winemakers have employed various techniques to improve the depth and complexity of their cuvees. The passito and ripasso methods have been the most successful: the former is used in the Recioto della Valpolicella and Amarone della Valpolicella, while the latter is used to make Valpolicella Ripasso. Ripasso was trademarked for many years by Masi (who are in the same village), fortunately it is a term that has been freed for all to use, a great step forward for the consumer because it is a very distinct style of wine. Righetti’s take on ripasso is a conventional one; the grapes are crushed and fermented at the end of the harvest and the wine is stored in steel vats where it rests until the springtime awaiting the Amarone to finish its fermentation.  When the fermentation is complete the Amarone is taken off its skins and transferred to casks for ageing, it is replaced by a future Campolieti, the wine is enriched a little to get the fermentation going again and this draws some of the lovely flavours that remain in the Amarone skins and adds a little more alcohol.   The finished wine is transferred to a mixture of large oak casks and some barrique for 8 to 12 month stint of maturation before being transferred to steel tanks prior to bottling. On offer this week is their 2013 Campolieti Valpolicella.  This is without a doubt my favourite wine from our portfolio.  My wife and I adopted the Righetti Campolieti as our preferred “house wine” many vintges ago.  Over the years we have consumed countless cases – never being disappointed.  It is a delicious wine that is well suited to a wide range of foods; also terrific as an aperitif.  Try it, you’ll like it! The 2013 Campolieti Valpolicella is available for immediate delivery. To order , click here 2013 Luigi Righetti Valpolicella Campolieti Ripasso $19.60 btl / $235.20 cs (case of 12 x 750ml) The wine is medium bodied with strawberry, black cherry and plum aromas with hints of leather, autumn leaves, cocoa and asian spice.  The palate is vibrantly fruity and lightly tannic. Campolieti means “happy fields” and refers to the vineyards from which the grapes are harvested.  The wine is a traditional blend of Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara (the Amarone and Valpolicella grapes) that has had a second fermentation on the pressings of the Amarone grapes (a process called “ripasso”). This wine is delicious when young and always has the structure to improve for years. Drink:  Now – 2020 Food Pairing: Pairs well with roasts, stews with meat and mushrooms, and seasoned cheeses
