Dona Matilde

The Barros Family is an icon in the Port wine industry. The winery was founded in 1913 by Manoel de Barros and Manoel Almeida who established a Port wine shipping company in Villa Nova de Gaia a city across the river from Porto. When Manoel de Barros bought the current Dona Matilde in 1927 it was known as Enxodreiro but he renamed it Matilde to honour his wife.

The Barros Group grew and became one of the largest Port wine houses, but in 2006 the third generation decided to sell the business. However, Manuel Ângelo Barros bought back one of the family properties in the Douro called Dona Matilde which is the name the wine is produced under.

The property has 96 hectares of which 28 are under vines, 2-3 hectares with olives and about one hectare of oranges and the rest is wild Mediterranean vegetation with wildlife such as hawks and wild boar.

Of the vines under cultivation about half are old vines with 60 years of age and some are as old as ninety with 20-25 different types of grapes.

Dona Matilde produces a total of 60,000 bottles of table wine and 10,000 bottles of high end Port wine.
