Fine Italian Fizz to Toast Fall!
Wednesday, September 30, 2015
Franciacorta, like Champagne, is both a geographic area as well as a sparkling wine. Awarded the coveted DOCG designation in 1995, Franciacorta is located east of Milan in north-central Italy and extends between Brescia, Lake Garda and Trento, south of Lake Iseo. It is a small area with relatively ...  read more »
Ripe and Ready Cabernet from the Veneto
Wednesday, September 23, 2015
Luigi Righetti is one Veneto producer that has embraced the French varietal Cabernet Sauvignon. What makes this wine very unique is the manner in which it is produced: similar to the famous Amarone of the region, Sognum is made with semi-dried grapes, which concentrate the fruit flavours and add richness ...  read more »
A Super "Super Tuscan" from Jacopo Biondi Santi
Wednesday, September 16, 2015
On offer this week is the 2011 Jacopo Biondi Santi Braccale. The wine is a blend of 80% Sangiovese and 20 % Merlot - a subtle balance between the austerity of traditional Sangiovese and the roundness of Merlot, perfectly adapted to the Maremma. The vineyards for this wine are 900-1350 feet above ...  read more »

Codorniu
0, Anna de Codorniu
Penedes, Spain
Major Grape: Chardonnay
Tasting Notes
Produced using the Tradtional Method of sparkling wine production, and aged for at least 15 months on lees, making this a Reserva Cava. Brilliant yellow colour with green reflections. Fine, persistent bubbles forming continuous beads. On the nose, it displays citrusy and tropical fruit notes along with more complex aging aromas (toast & brioche) that enrich the range of aromas. On the palate, it is creamy, wide and long-lasting. The result is a highly versatile wine, pairable with a great variety of food.
Review
This has become the flagship Cava of Codorniu. It is wildly popular in Spain, and quickly catching on in the U.S. It is fresh and crisp, with lots of acidity (8-10 gms/liter) and it is extremely dry (only 1.3 g/l dosage of residual sugar). Anna de Codorníu, made from 70 percent Chardonnay and 30 percent Parellada (indigenous variety known for its acidity), is my candidate for the world’s best value sparkling wine. Graceland Vineyards
2014, Cabernet Sauvignon
Stellenbosch, South Africa
Major Grape: Cabernet Sauvignon
Tasting Notes
2014 shows a dark inky colour and concentrated flavours, although the wine is still as elegant as previous vintages. A fascinating demonstration of the effect of two different soil types, with the same vinification. Good soft tannin structure. Abounds with cassis, blackberry and spicy notes. Complex and layered, with good definition and structure. Drink now and for a few years.
Domaine Prieur Brunet
2012, Santenay 1er Cru Maladiere
Bourgogne, France
Major Grape: Pinot Noir
Tasting Notes
This wine shows a beautiful balance between finesse and body. Pretty and fragrant with flavours highlighting raspberry, strawberry and black currants, with fine tannins and a hint of vanilla. Can accompany meals of pork or chicken, but also has enough structure to stand up to beef or lamb dishes.
