2014, Assyrtiko Thalassitis
Nemea, Greece
Major Grape: Assyrtico
Tasting Notes
This unique wine is produced on the island of Santorini. The vines are planted on a 15-degree slope facing East and Southeast on transferred pumice stone soil. The wine is made from the Assyrtiko grape and is light and aromatic. Only free run must is used, which is then fermented for approximately days at 15C. The resulting wine is almost white in color, bone-dry, with strong character, eliciting considerable structure, with crisp acidity, distinctive minerality and delicate honeysuckle aromas.
The 2014 Thalassitis is a fresh and clean Assyrtiko with fine acidity and a salty finish. Showing some bite on the finish, it becomes more powerful with aeration. This is mostly about elegance this year, though, as it shows just beautifully and seems rather approachable at an early age. As always, there are layers lurking underneath. Giving it another year in the cellar would likely help make it more expressive Score 91,, June 2015
Terre Gaie
2013, Me•Mo Rosso
Veneto, Italy
Major Grape: Merlot
Tasting Notes
Fruit forward, rich and mouthwatering, showing generous red fruits complemented by spicy notes giving an overall impression reminiscent of an amaro. The fresh and fruity Merlot is bolstered by the complexity contributed by 4 year-old Montepulciano sourced from the winery owner’s personal vineyards. Not technically allowed in an Italian wine labelled Merlot, but it makes for a great combination!
Tua Rita
2012, Perlato del Bosco
Toscana, Italy
Major Grape: 100% Sangiovese
Tasting Notes
2011 marks the first year for which Perlato del Bosco is made from 100% Sangiovese since 2001. In interim years, the Sangiovese was blended wth Cabernet Sauvignon. Concentrated, dense, nearly opaque purple in colour, Perlato del Bosco delivers tantalizing aromas of blackberries, black cherries, currants, ripe plums, tea leaves, exotic spices, and leather. Rich and full-bodied on the palate, this wine's enticing fruit flavours are accompanied by notes of anise, violets, and peppery spice, all of which are framed by fine-grained tannins.
